Nixor College Foundation Program

Nixor Corporate

Internships, apprenticeships, and work-study are all ways in which students add to their skill-set by working in corporate environments. Nixor College, however, addresses this important aspect of learning in a whole new way. It seeks to augment AS and A Level students with skills necessary for the corporate world by providing a unique opportunity in which they experience, first-hand, what it’s like to be a business executive.

Nixor Corporate, a conglomerate of fifteen student-run business entities, and one of many structured ECA options available to students, seeks to invest in the next generation of business leaders to introduce functional managers with advanced decision-making and execution skills necessary to become efficient executives.  The Nixor Corporate portfolio comprises of six registered non-profit entities, and nine for-profit units, managed and operated entirely by its executives.

Mirrored in the real world, the experience at Nixor College allows students to develop skills related to both generalization of function and specialization in industry. For instance, the function of a CFO may remain largely the same ranging from the health care sector to the entertainment industry, while the function of a Project Manager or COO may be industry specific. This requires executives to fluidly shift between the small but important details and the larger picture, to be able to identify key patterns in complicated market systems, and to anticipate responses of external players.

In addition to managerial skills, executives must learn essential team management skills. CEO’s must learn to recruit, evaluate, and mediate with a wide variety of people with unique strengths, weaknesses, and temperaments. To be able to draw on the experiences, interests, and strengths of a team member, while helping to overcome weakness is central to the role of any manager. The realization that ultimately the best performing teams are not driven by control and power, but rather are led by influence and inspiration, is one of the key deliverables for Nixor Corporate.

The Nixor Corporate program instills a sense of financial responsibility: students learn about taking calculated risks after conducting several feasibility studies and constructing alternate business models to maximize output while maintaining sustainability in a competitive market. Entities manage portfolios worth millions of rupees that have been generated by providing specialized services with respect to the sector of industry they specialize in, pioneering products and carving out their niche, and by raising funds by organizing donation drives.

Nixor Corporate produces leaders; leaders that are able to speak the language of all functions and translate when necessary, leaders that ask the right questions, leaders that know the right metrics for recruiting and evaluating people to manage areas in which they themselves are not experts, leaders that strive for nothing short of excellence, leaders that transform a group of people into a strategic business unit, leaders with ethics, leaders with accountability.

New ideas are introduced as small startup projects, demonstrating the ability to analyze and design a business model in which strategy, structure, operating models and skill sets fit together effectively. This leads to a fundamental change in organizational structure in the metamorphosis from a small startup, to an entity with a complete C-Level staff with well defined functional roles. While it is strongly encouraged that entities explore unchartered territory to broaden their horizons, it then becomes increasingly important to maintain focus in their areas of expertise to maintain their competitive edge. In contrast, existing entities unable to meet consumer demands or are unable to generate sufficient capital to sustain themselves fall prey to the free market system and are squeezed out.

Nixor Corporate encompasses many other realities of the corporate world which are often glossed over in the idealized academic environment.  Unlike teams working on academic projects, business teams are in a constant state of flux. Student volunteers, staff members and executives are promoted up the organizational hierarchy based on the value they add to the organization.  Some are hired away to work on other entities.  Persistent underperformance despite counseling results in termination of the contract.  Periodic performance reviews are conducted by all who have direct reports.  The appraisal is documented and made part of the student’s permanent school record.  This record then becomes part of the counselor’s recommendation for the student – Accountability.

Despite the level of autonomy given to entities, Nixor Corporate is watched closely by a group of administrators who believe in leadership development and, despite the many bumps in the road that form part of the learning experience, are able-and willing- to give effective counsel to their young executives to ensure that they thrive and emerge as responsible, accountable, ethical, and tactical enterprise leaders who will be tomorrow’s architects of Pakistani society.

This program is not developed to simulate the real world – it is the real world. The opportunities, the money, the products and services, the risks and benefits, the boundless commitment and colossal number of hours of hard work, and the lives touched both inside and outside the walls of this institution are all too real. From multi-million rupee housing and rehabilitation programs for flood victims, to gifts for terminally ill children, the scope of Nixor Corporate is vast, and is bound only by the principles and core values that this institution rests on.

We believe that there is no substitute for actually making the calls and learning from their outcome. This, is our call.
